Preventing Violence Against Women
Human Trafficking, Chairs: Robin Thompson and Patty Draper Zonta members participate in training to learn how to "spread the word:" about human trafficking, how to detect trafficking, and what to do and who to contact if one becomes aware of human trafficking activities. Members also prepare prayer cards, information cards and a calendar with information about trafficking and resources for victims.
Refuge House Bed, Bath and Hope, Chair: Mary Garvin
The Bed Bath & Hope project goal is to work with Zonta members and organizations to which they belong to in order to set up a network to supply Refuge House with new twin bed sheet sets and new towel sets. In the first year, 2009-2010, Refuge House anticipates they will need 600 new sheet sets and 800 new towel sets. The Bed Bath & Hope Project is scheduled to run 3 years. A FACT SHEET has been prepared to provide more information to partner organizations.
This project provides volunteers to help out in the Thrift Shop. Volunteers are needed to help keep the store looking nice and running smoothly. Volunteers sort, tag, display merchandise and assist customers. All proceeds from the Thrift Shop go directly to support Refuge House services. Zonta volunteers will also take opportunities to inform customers about Refuge House and how their shopping helps. Refuge House clients receive vouchers to shop free for clothes and certain goods for themselves and their children.

Elder women are the “wise women” of our generation. However, these women are often lonely and inactive. They need socialization, emotional support, and projects that engage them cognitively. Activities and/or projects will address these needs and enhance the quality of life for these wonderful women… our grandmothers, mothers, sisters, friends, etc.
Two facilities have been identified as in order to provide Zontians with opportunities to work with women who attend a day stay program – service opportunities during the day and an assisted living community – service opportunities during early evening.
PACE Center for Girls Adopt A Girl, Chair: Sharon Wynn The PACE Center is a program for at risk girls. Zonta members can adopt a PACE girl for the year (mostly middle school age), with 3-4 projects throughout the year in which Zonta members will directly interact with the girls. November: meet girl and obtain "holiday gift bag" letter; December: attend function in which the gift bags are distributed; Spring: have 1-2 activities to involve the mentor and the girl. Other activities for PACE girls may be developed during the year. Activities discussed as possibilities are: book club, providing materials for reward shop, Zontians speak on their careers, working with girls on public speaking, girls attending theatre night as a reward.
Mammogram Project, Chair: Patsy Eccles The mammogram project provides health information, health education for women of all ages and breast cancer screening test for women age 40 and above who are without health insurance or are under insured.
