Refuge House Projects

The following projects are in support of Refuge House

Refuge House Comfort Packs Chair: Glenda Conley or Wendy Grey

Description:   This service project aims to support and provide a sense of dignity to women in our community who are victims of rape.   Zonta members will put together 80 “comfort packs” of clothes and toiletries for rape victims so they can be clothed after their hospital stay.  They are unable to go home in the clothing they wear to the hospital because law enforcement keeps it for evidence.

Zonta Objective:   Improve the health and well-being of women

Outcome:  Women who seek medical treatment following a rape will receive a “comfort pack” of clothes to wear home from the hospital, along with personal toiletries.

Are you shopping for a Zonta service project? The Refuge House Thrift Store just might be the Shop for you.  It gives you a chance to earn service points, have fun, hang out with Zonta friends, AND help Refuge House.

The Thrift Store accepts donations of clothing, home goods, furniture, appliances and more from the public.  What happens to those donations?  That’s where Zonta volunteers are needed.

Zontians gather at the Refuge House Thrift Store one Saturday of each month (usually the 1st Saturday).   Some Zontians also come at additional times.  different times.  What do Zontians do?  Whatever needs to be done!

If you have ever worked in a retail store, you know what that means.

On a Saturday, Zontians can be seen

    • unpacking, sorting and organizing donated items

    • stocking , straightening, or sizing clothing racks

    • displaying merchandise

    • maintaining a clean and tidy looking retail facility

    • assisting staff in serving customer needs

    • receiving donation

You might even see Zontians shopping.

The Thrift Store is open to the public for shopping.  The donated items are re-sold.  One hundred percent of the proceeds go straight back to Refuge House to fund crucial services for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

In addition to raising money, the Thrift Store serves as a “no-cost” department store for the clients of Refuge House.  I this way, women are treated with dignity and have the opportunity to shop for themselves and their children.

When families leave the Shelter, the Thrift Store provides them with furniture, appliances, bedding, and household items to help furnish their new homes.
